"As of right now, Horla’s third demo has two different album covers. One that is listed on EM, which is terrible, and the other that I took from the bandcamp page. I find album art important because Horla’s third demo is filled with so much lo fi brutality, as well as haunting ambiance, that its cover is not suitable unless it is a swirling post impressionist vortex. Additionally, Horla’s vocals are split between multiple overdubbing, which leads to a truly demonic experience. Seeing a crudely drawn demon for the cover sort of ruins the experience, if you know what I mean. Horla’s music, for being part of the demon world, is damn intriguing and further adds points to the argument for English black metal. I will probably have to do an article on English black metal now."

Petit one-man band originaire de Norwich, Horla fut créé en milieu d'année 2012, et après sa première démo passée plutôt inaperçue "Primordial Mockery", voilà qu'il nous sort une nouvelle démo en septembre, "Tentacles", qui respire déjà une plus grande maîtrise mais toujours les mêmes types d'ambiances glauques et torturées...
Évoluant dans un Post-Black dépressif et torturé, O.G. nous offre derrière un artwork très étrange une musique dans la même idée, c'est à dire lugubre et violente, tourmentée et réellement obsédante...
Débutant sur un titre mélangeant Ambient et Dark Noise, "Infinite Tentacles", très sombre, et bien trop long pour être considéré comme une introduction, on peut dire que l'on est directement plongé dans l'ambiance de la démo, où les samples d'eau remuante et les résonances stridentes dans les oreilles nous jettent comme un froid...
Puis arrive "The Light Which Leads the Way of Your Progress", violent et perturbant, qui commence brutalement, et nous voilà partis dans un voyage mouvementé entre riffs mélodiques et rapides, saccadés et brutaux, batterie déchaînée et chant black très étrange, car à la frontière entre le chant Dark Métal et Black Dépressif, parfois accompagné de hurlements lamentés version Moloch, se voyant même pencher dans des accents plus gutturaux mais se plaçant plus entre un Immortal et un Cradle Of Filth voire même Impaled Nazarene, mais seulement au niveau des influences, car il reste très original et donc difficile à comparer...
"Ces Profondes et Delicates Racines..."; rien que le nom offre déjà une ouverture d'esprit très innovante, puisque le one-man band ne se limite pas au simple langage anglophone et se sert d'une langue très appréciée dans le Black Métal, le français, pour un titre encore plus dévastateur que le précédent... entièrement instrumental mais d'une puissance inouïe où le mur de guitares ne fait qu'un avec la batterie ultra-bourrine pour un final renversant, on peut dire qu'Horla a mis le paquet pour l'instant, car on ne s'ennuie pas et rien que ces trois premières chansons s'enfilent comme du beurre, pour laisser place au dernier titre, tout aussi original.
Original dans le sens où pour commencer, c'est encore un autre langage qui est utilisé ici, l'italien, "Quella Piovra è il Piacere, Quella Piovra è la Morte", mais aussi que l'anglais a légèrement varié le chant, celui-ci étant moins rapide que dans "The Light Which Leads the Way of Your Progress", parfois même sussuré, se grefant encore entre des guitares mélodiques et entrelacées et toujours cette batterie violente, encore un titre qui ne nous laisse aucun répit!!
Finalement, cette première démo, quoiqu'assez courte, passe à toute vitesse, aussi vite que le rythme des musiques à vrai dire, présentant ainsi un nouveau one-man band au réel potentiel, empli de convictions, et qui à visiblement l'air de maîtriser son mélange entre Post-Black Dépressif et Black/Dark Métal violent, simple et rapide d'exécution, convaincant et perturbant. En plus de thèmes assez originaux, Horla s'impose avec une musique qui sort assez du Black Métal simple de d'habitude, ici pas de répit, mais pour notre plus grand plaisir, les amateurs d'ambiances à la fois glauques et brutales seront ravis.

Horla are a 1 man band from the United Kingdom that has had their recent ep reviewed in this zine with their music style being more depressive post black metal on this recording and this is a review of their self released 2012 demo "Primordial Mockery".
Drums range from slow to mid paced drumming with not much in the way of fast playing or blast beats, while the bass playing has a very strong and powerful sound with primitive black metal riffing that dominates throughout the recording.
Rhythm guitars range from slow to mid paced black metal riffs that combine modern, depressive and post black metal together while still maintaining a raw and primitive feeling and there are no guitar solos or leads present on this recording.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams that bring in the old school elements of the genre as well as some samples, while the lyrics cover dark themes, as for the production it has a very dark, raw and primitive sound while you can still hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.
In my opinion this was another great recording from Horla and if you are into depressive, primitive or post black metal, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Spell". RECOMMENDED BUY.

Horla are a 1 man band from the United Kingdom that plays a very raw and primitive form of black metal that utilizes some ambient, post, and depressive elements and this is a review of their self released 2012 ep "Tentacles".
Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with some blast beats being thrown into the music at times, while the synths when they are utilized bring a very dark ambient, experimental and avant garde sound to the music, as for the bass playing it has a very strong and powerful sound with primitive black metal riffing that dominates throughout the recording.
Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast raw and primitive sounding black metal riffs that combine old school, post, and depressive black metal together to create a sound of their own with some melodic and a brief use of clean parts and there are no guitar solos or leads present on this recording.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams that have a ritualistic and depressive feeling to them as well as some spoken word parts, while the lyrics cover dark themes with a couple of the songs being written in a foreign language, as for the production it has a very dark, raw and primitive sound to it while you can still hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.
In my opinion Horla are a very great sounding hybrid of old school, depressive, and post black metal and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Light Which Leads The Way Of Your Progress" and "Quella Piovra e il Piacre, Qualla Piovra e le Morte". RECOMMENDED BUY.
